Actress, singer, and writer Mae West (1893-1980) is remembered during American Diabetes Month. The controversial performer suffered from the disease at the end of her life. West began acting on stage as a child and achieved notoriety in the mid-1920s after being convicted of obscenity for a Broadway play. Moving to Hollywood in 1931, West became a star because of roles in such films as I’m No Angel (1933). Still working well into her eighties, West died on November 22, 1980, in Hollywood.
